Alaska Governor honors Lynden Air Cargo with North Star Award

The 2017 North Star Awards were announced this week by Gov. Bill Walker in Juneau. Lynden Air Cargo was recognized in the Transportation and Humanitarian Exchange categories and was one of only four companies to receive the honor. For more than 30 years, the Governor's North Star Awards for International Excellence have recognized Alaskan companies and organizations engaged in successful international business and activities.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award which we share with our employees and the Lynden family of companies,” said Rick Zerkel, Lynden Air Cargo President. “All of our employees – in the air and on the ground – pride themselves on providing safe and reliable service while opening new international markets and opportunities to Alaska. Wherever Lynden Air Cargo flies, it proudly represents Lynden, but also its home state of Alaska.”
 
Lynden pioneered service to Alaska in 1954 and today serves customers in every sector of the Alaska economy, including energy, mining, seafood, retail, military and government. Lynden Air Cargo’s fleet of L-382 Hercules aircraft transport everything from groceries to cars within Alaska through weekly scheduled flights and oversized cargo worldwide through charter flights. Its Hercules aircraft have responded to fires, earthquakes in Haiti, supported a peacekeeping mission in the African Congo and, most recently, mobilized relief flights to help those affected by Hurricanes Irma, Jose, and Maria in the Caribbean. Flight crews worked in situations where there was little information about airport conditions and contaminated fuel supplies.

“Since 1986, these awards have honored Alaskan companies that engage in successful international business and activities, and this year’s honorees should be proud of the role they play in connecting our state to the rest of the world,” said Governor Walker. “This diverse group of organizations is emblematic of the spirit of the North Star Awards.”

Lynden makes Green Supply Chain Partner, Top 100 3PL lists for sixth consecutive year

For the sixth consecutive year, the Lynden family of companies was named one of Inbound Logistics magazine's annual Top 100 3PLs and 75 Green Supply Chain Partners (G75). Lynden is profiled in the June issue of the magazine for "focusing its people, equipment, processes and technology on efficient use of resources and sustainable operations." The Top 100 3PL list appears in the July issue and singles Lynden out for providing excellence in transportation and logistics solutions and exceeding customer expectations. Both lists are compiled by surveying hundreds of supply chain professionals.

"From recycling materials to updating fleets with the latest technology for mile-per-gallon gains, Green Supply Chain Partners like Lynden constantly innovate to work greener," says Felecia Stratton, Inbound Logistics Editor. Inbound Logistics' annual 75 Green Supply Chain Partners (G75) showcases the top 75 companies that demonstrate green best practices in their supply chain, logistics and transportation operations. Editors comb through submissions from companies with impressive green credentials and ultimately choose the G75 based on four benchmarks: measurable green results, sustainability innovation, continuous improvement and industry recognition.

Alaska Marine Lines protects local waters in Seattle

Alaska_Marine_Lines_on_Duwamish_River.jpgAlaska Marine Lines/ Terminal 115 (Y-5) has gone above and beyond to prevent pollution and keep sediment, trace metals and accidental spills out of Seattle’s Duwamish River.

Silt and trace metals such as copper and zinc occasionally come into Alaska Marine Lines facilities from dust and dirt in the wind or on trucks and shipping containers, and in rainwater. Truck and forklift tires are the primary contributors of zinc. The Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and filtration equipment keeps these sediments, metals and other contaminants out of the storm drains and river when it rains.

“The first line of defense is good training,” says Training Manager Jerome Chen. “Our people are trained to respond immediately to all spills and our two sweepers clean up about 25 tons of dirt per month.” Filter baskets in 264 storm drain catch basins at AML locations remove silt and form a barrier to catch fluids from accidental spills.

Every catch basin is tied into a Clear Water treatment system. Since 2014, the treatment systems have processed and discharged millions of gallons of clean water. The tanks were constructed out of containers and flat-racks. 

In addition to the Clear Water system, three new storm water Rx units were recently installed to capture extra runoff at Y-5 and incorporate runoff from Y-3 and Y-4. The passive filtration system targets a variety of pollutants and discharges clean, treated storm water into the Duwamish River. During an exceptionally large rainstorm, nearly 200,000 gallons of water was successfully treated in one day at Terminal 115 (Y-5).

“Alaska Marine Lines locations at Y1 and Y2 have been using these Rx systems since 2011 and have consistently achieved testing benchmarks. We anticipate similar results for the other locations with our newly installed systems,” explains Andrew Heuscher, Director of Safety.

Other clean and green improvements:

  • Last winter, the salt bagging operation moved from Y1 to Y5 and a new covered salt storage and bagging operation was installed. The move has eliminated excessive moisture in the bagged salt and reduced salt leaching into the filtration units.
  • Lines running between catch basins at Y-4 and Y-5 were cleaned of years of metal-laden silt and silt. Efforts continue with lines in Yards 1, 2, and 3.

LTI, Inc. receives third consecutive EPA SmartWay Excellence Award

SmartWay logoLTI, Inc. and its Milky Way division received a third consecutive SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA awards recognize the top one percent of SmartWay partners for superior environmental performance and leadership. LTI, Inc. earned a top score in the Tanker Fleet Category based on its exceptional fuel economy, payload, idle time and modern emissions equipment.

"We are extremely proud to receive a third Excellence Award from the EPA. Our entire team deserves credit for maintaining our high standards of productivity, efficiency and environmental stewardship," says LTI, Inc. President Jason Jansen. Alaska Marine Lines invests in world's most efficient refrigerated units

AML logoAlaska Marine Lines, a Lynden company providing marine transportation to and from Alaska, is continuing its efforts to work lean and green by purchasing 200 of the most energy efficient refrigerated units in the world. The Star Cool "reefers" achieve the industry's lowest energy consumption by matching the compressor speed to the required heat load of the container rather than running at a single constant speed. In addition, the box and refrigeration equipment are built as one unit with an insulation system designed to minimize energy loss.

"At Lynden, we foster a culture of customer service, innovation and efficiency with a focus on protecting the environments where we do business," says Alex McKallor, Executive Vice President of Operations. "We operate under a company-wide Green Initiative and adopt programs and practices that reduce our environmental impact. Investing in this new energy efficient equipment is part of that effort."

Alaska Marine Lines barge into the sunsetAlaska Marine Lines already uses a time-share system on frozen loads, greatly reducing energy consumption, and the new Star Cool reefers will allow the same energy saving results for chill loads. The energy saved will make it possible to power more units during Alaska's peak fish season to accommodate high volumes for customers without additional generators, energy use and fuel costs.

Over the past two years, Alaska Marine Lines phased out its 220-volt reefers and transitioned to more energy efficient 440-volt units. The company has worked to reduce fuel use and conserve energy in other areas as well. Working with partner Western Towboat, fuel and route optimization has reduced fuel use without compromising service. At the Seattle terminal, lighting and heating upgrades have reduced electric and natural gas use, and new electric forklifts emit 50 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the older propane units.

Alaska Marine Lines also works with local communities and other Lynden companies to support recycling efforts around Alaska. The company moves nearly 3,500 tons of recyclables each year from Anchorage to Seattle for Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR), helping to make drop-off recycling free and convenient for residents. In Cordova, the company donates shipment of gill nets for the Copper River Watershed Project as well as aluminum cans and cardboard where proceeds from recycling go to the local high school.

Along with sister companies Lynden Transport and Alaska West Express, Alaska Marine Lines has earned Alaska's Green Star Award, recognizing businesses that practice waste reduction, energy conservation, and pollution prevention. Alaska West Express joins EPA's Smartway Transport Partnership

SmartWay is a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and transportation companies to voluntarily improve fuel efficiency and reduce air pollution from freight transport. Partners with high scores are already utilizing most of the commercially available fuel saving strategies and evaluating the latest emerging technologies. Sister company Lynden Transport became the first Alaska trucking company to join SmartWay in 2008. Lynden companies LTI, Inc., Milky Way and Brown Line joined in 2010.

Energy efficiency continues across Lynden companies

Green LyndenLynden companies continue to be committed to working lean and green every day of the year.  Since 2008, improvements such as lighting upgrades, motion sensors, heating and air conditioning improvements, and strategic insulation have resulted in dramatic energy efficiency improvements.

Alaska Hovercraft in Bethel replaced High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights with high efficiency fluorescents at the airport and shop and saw an immediate 26 percent reduction in electricity use. “We recouped the cost of both upgrades in less than two months. The new lights are so bright that we can shut down half the warehouse lights during low traffic work hours without any safety concerns,” says General Manager Kevin Carter.

At Alaska Marine Lines in Seattle, the newEnergy efficiency at Alaska Marine Lines Container Freight Station (CFS) expansion also included the installation of high efficiency lights. Employees came up with the idea to paint walls, ceiling, doors, and headers bright white and scrubbing and resealing floors. The white walls reflect light and eliminate the need for more lighting fixtures. “We also replaced the old thermostats and eliminated several heating systems working against each other,” explains Seattle Terminal Manager Mark Gaska.

Other improvements throughout Lynden companies include:

  • At LTI, Inc. in Sunnyside, WA, lighting upgrades in the shop and individual motion sensors installed on each light allow partial instead of full lighting of the shop. The change resulted in a 20 percent reduction in energy use.

  • Lynden International’s Boston employees worked with their landlord to install an automatic thermostat and saw a 30 percent reduction in electricity and heating use.

  • Anchorage's South Air Park facility uses "heat recovery" to heat some spaces while cooling others. A split duct in the IT computer room reroutes warm air into the basement below the offices and warm air from the second floor offices is rerouted to the cross dock.

  • In Fairbanks, Lynden Transport’s recent warehouse expansion and upgrades included installing a dock door “curtain” to reduce heat loss in the winter months plus new dock plates and insulation to keep a tight seal around the doors.  “But the biggest change was a new heating system which allowed us to manage our heat with digital thermostats. We can now set temperatures for specific times of day and days of the week,” says Manager Greg Busher. The changes have resulted in a 20 percent reduction in natural gas use from 2011 to 2012. The Fairbanks upgrades were identified as potential ideas in an energy audit for the company done in 2011.

“A number of our companies participated in the Alaska Energy Authority program and signed up for audits to identify priorities for energy upgrades in 2011 and 2012,” explains Anna Deal, Lynden’s Green Team and Green Initiative Coordinator. “The greatest opportunity for savings comes from replacing inefficient lighting, installing automatic controls such as digitally controlled thermostats and motion sensors, sealing air leaks and repairing insulation around dock doors and other areas.”

Alaska West Express Tests Extended Oil Changes

Alaska West Express truckAlaska West Express is testing an on-board oil filtration system on six of its tractors that is allowing the company to operate even more clean and green. The trucks can now run as many as 145,000 miles between oil changes, eliminating around 56 oil changes and saving 657 gallons of oil.

A six-micron filter removes debris from the oil and has a heating element to eliminate moisture. "The removal of moisture from the oil keeps the acidity of the oil in check and almost completely removes sludge," says Steve Nolan of Alaska West Express in Fairbanks. Rather than changing the oil every 25,000 miles, oil is tested and changed only when necessary which lowers maintenance costs.

Alaska Marine Lines has been using similar units to filter hydraulic fluid and oil on its equipment. "These units require a change in thinking from routine oil changes to sampling and changing based on actual need," says Les Candee, Equipment Maintenance and Procurement Manager at Alaska Marine Lines.  "It requires that sampling becomes part of the maintenance culture, as opposed to automatically draining and disposing of all fluids on a time-based program".

These maintenance programs are part of Lynden's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

Lynden marks Earth Day by introducing more fuel-efficient equipment

Lynden celebrated the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day this month by continuing its environmental sustainability efforts. The Lynden family of transportation companies has been an industry leader in reducing its carbon footprint including recent design changes in its truck fleet that have improved fuel economy by 23 percent.

"Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect on the many ways Lynden is committed to protecting the environments where we do business. We were working 'green' before it became so popular," says Alex McKallor, Chief Operating Officer for Lynden Inc. "From innovative containers to equipment that requires less fuel and reduces harmful pollutants, we are constantly searching for ways to save energy and use resources efficiently. Our culture of innovation and efficiency is in harmony with our commitment to reduce waste and be a model of environmental stewardship."

Lynden was the first transportation company in Alaska to gain SmartWay certification from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and to earn the state's Green Star Award. It is on the list of Inbound Logistics' Green Supply Chain Partners and, in 2008, Lynden launched a Green Initiative stating its goals and asking employees for ideas on how to operate 'leaner and greener.' Many of these suggestions have been implemented.

Most recently, Lynden company Brown Line LLC introduced an aerodynamic tractor-trailer design with side skirts and roof fairings that improved fuel economy. The design, plus other changes such as driver training, reducing speeds and new engines and tires, has helped Brown Line drastically reduce fuel consumption and emissions by nearly 25 percent.

In addition to its own green efforts, Lynden supports local organizations in their environmental programs. Lynden transports recyclable paper from Anchorage to Seattle for Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) and moves aluminum cans from Cordova to Anchorage for recycling in support of Cordova High School's fundraising program. Lynden Air Cargo participates in a back haul program for the Yukon River Tribal Watershed Council to help clean up Alaska's village communities and Alaska Marine Lines transports gillnets for recycling in Cordova.
