multi_modal“At Lynden, we focus on doing things the right way – for our customers, employees, the health and safety of all, and for the protection of the environment,” says Stephanie Sears, Lynden’s Environmental Impact Manager. Lynden is known for its investment in and development of the industry’s best, most efficient equipment to serve its customers. An added benefit is the reduced impact of its operations wherever the Lynden companies do business. Lynden’s vast array of multi-modal equipment allows it to offer Dynamic Routing (only pay for the speed you need), an efficient and environmentally responsible option for customers.

“What we’ve been doing for years is being recognized more and more as one of the most low-emission ways to move freight,” explains Lynden President Jon Burdick. “We provide modal choice – the option of shipping by a mode that is less carbon intense than another – to align with our customer’s needs, whether that’s speed, cost or a goal to de-carbonize the project.”

From the slowest speed and lowest emissions of barge transport, to the fastest for emergency delivery via aircraft – customers choose their own path, or Lynden’s experts can put together a route to reduce the carbon footprint. Over the years, the custom plans have saved significant emissions while providing award-winning innovation and reliable transportation.

Besides Dynamic Routing, Lynden’s environmental efforts include replacing more than 70 percent of small forklifts with electric models. At Lynden Air Cargo, microvanes have been installed on aircraft to improve air flow, saving 20,000 gallons of fuel per year and eliminating 6,000 tons of emissions. At Lynden International Logistics in Canada, reusable packing has saved more than 3 million pounds of waste annually.

“Customer requests for environmental data are becoming more common when they select carriers,” Stephanie explains. “It makes a difference when customers see the effort we make to work clean and green. We want to be their first choice, and to make sure they know that green isn’t just our corporate color, it’s how we work and do business.”

In March, Stephanie traveled to the Washington state capital to share her thoughts with the Washington Transportation Committee at a hearing on clean trucks and renewable fuel sources. “Our trucks are among the most efficient on the road,” she says, “and we are continually exploring improvements. Non-fossil fuel-based options, renewable diesel and natural gas and electric trucks were all topics of discussion at the hearing. We need more options for the trucking industry, and I am making sure that Lynden companies have a voice in these discussions.”
