A wish comes true in Wrangell

Arrowhead Transfer Port Manager Scott Curley heard about a surprise shipment of Cars-themed bedroom furniture arriving in Wrangell on the barge. He then discovered that the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked the local fire department to deliver the furniture to a local boy via fire truck.Blog crop (2)-2

Scott decided the fire truck delivery was a "bit bland" so he came up with a new plan. "Scott suggested that we decorate one of our tractors and a forklift to match the characters in the Cars movie and join the delivery by creating a parade," explains Charity Hommel, Customer Service Manager.

Jason Gadd suffers from a form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. Jason's mother Dacee wrote to the foundation with a wish for furniture matching his favorite movie Cars. Scott, his wife Keeleigh, Dorthea Rooney, Charity, local drivers and Jason's uncles pulled the pallet of furniture when it arrived via barge, assembled it and loaded it on a flatbed for delivery the next day. The team then got to work decorating the vehicles as Guido and Mack.

"We spent our fourth of July in the warehouse working on this," Scott says. "We went through a lot of construction paper and tape!" On delivery day, the firetruck arrived at Jason's home and took him for a ride while volunteers assembled the furniture in his bedroom. "When Jason returned, the parade was ready with more than 50 Wrangell residents lining the streets all the way to Jason's front door," Scott says.

According to Dacee, she saw emotions in Jason that day that she hadn't seen in years. "I am just so thankful to everyone," she says.

Wrangell resident and Arrowhead customer Jim Debord wrote in to share what he witnessed that day. "Your people definitely went above and beyond to make that boy feel special. You have some really awesome people here representing your company."

Lynden Transport earns 25th Quest for Quality Award

Lynden Transport earned its 25th Quest for Quality award this year, marking a quarter century benchmark of providing the highest level of customer service and performance. Upholding its gold standard, Lynden Transport received an award for 2021 in the Less-than-Truckload (LTL) Western Regional category as it has in years past. The annual Logistics Management awards are the ultimate measure of customer satisfaction and performance excellence for carriers, ports and logistics providers worldwide.

The Quest for Quality Awards are the culmination of a six-month research project conducted by Peerless Research Group (PRG). For nearly four decades, the awards have been regarded in the transportation and logistics industry as the most important standard of customer satisfaction and performance excellence. To determine the 'best of the best,' transportation and supply chain decision-makers rate carriers, logistics providers and port operators on service quality in various categories such as on-time performance, value and customer service. This year, 4,187 ballots were cast from logistics and supply chain decision makers resulting in 142 companies earning Quest for Quality Awards.

Lynden helps shore up stores for a new year

Shopping MallThe COVID pandemic put a strain on retail businesses this year and that was especially felt during the holiday season. “I don’t think any of our retail customers could’ve prepared for the massive changes brought on by the pandemic,” says Howard Hales, Lynden Logistics Domestic Services Manager in Seattle. “COVID turned the world upside down and retail was hit hard. At the beginning of the shutdown this spring, we were in daily communication with our retailers. They needed to know where their product was along the supply chain and either stop shipments or store products at our warehouses until stores re-opened.”

The pandemic has been an elusive opponent for retail companies. Not knowing when stores could safely re-open, store managers played a waiting game wondering when conditions would improve enough to bring shoppers back into stores. According to Hales, retail companies are typically more than a year out on planning for their sales seasons. A whole supply and sales cycle is set based on shipping season-specific merchandise, and having the stores filled with that particular product in time for back-to-school or Christmas shoppers.

“When COVID hit, retailers were forced to shutter their stores for two to three months, and it broke that sales cycle,” he explains. “By the time they were able to start opening stores, they had merchandise on their shelves that had moved beyond the planned season, and new product was on the way or in their warehouses waiting to be moved to the stores.”

For Lynden’s long-time customers Gap and Old Navy, this overstock was both a dilemma and an opportunity. Their elegant solution made national headlines. Recognizing that the COVID crisis has left many families struggling to buy basic necessities like clothing, Old Navy donated $30 million of new clothing to American families. National and local charities, such as Delivering Good, helped distribute the clothing to those who needed it most. Gap asked Lynden to help coordinate the shipments to its major markets of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

“That decision created a whole new logistics cycle,” Hales says. “Gap had to source and supply all of their stores with packaging material so the merchandise could be boxed up and moved. They then had to coordinate the pickups with their local delivery providers for final delivery to the local charities.” As Gap’s primary transportation provider for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, Lynden coordinated store recoveries in the three markets and redelivered more than 400,000 units to local charities. Old Navy and Gap also donated 50,000 reusable masks to Boys & Girls Clubs of America as many have remained open and operational throughout the crisis as a safe place for kids and families in underserved communities.

Lynden performed similar work for other retail customers. “We had two COVID-related shutdowns for TJ Maxx,” says Stuart Nakayama, Director of Strategic Accounts and Hawaii Trade Services in Los Angeles. “Working with our ocean carrier Pasha, we came up with a solution to help them safely store their products through both shutdowns.” Lynden also helped ship personal protective equipment (PPE) to Hawaii and distributed it to the stores there, as well as all Hot Topic clothing stores in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico upon re-opening of their retail locations.

“The trick was not all stores were opened at the same time, and store hours and availability of store personnel varied,” Nakayama says, “so our Lynden employees had to hold product and get creative on delivery dates and times.”

In addition to apparel, Lynden works with “essential” retailers consisting of restaurants, health and beauty, and grocery stores in national markets. “Service to these customers was, and still is, impacted by airline capacity and delivery networks to some degree,” Nakayama says, “but it’s slowly improving. This year we have seen many changes in our retail markets and shopping patterns. While we can’t predict future change, Lynden can be the constant amid the change for our retail customers.”

Lynden delivers PPE to frontline medical workers in Alaska

Lynden delivers PPEEarlier this year Northern Star Resources Limited, owner of the Pogo Gold Mine, donated $1.5 million worth of medical personal protective equipment (PPE) to Alaska communities with a focus on Fairbanks and the delta regions. Lynden Logistics arranged customs clearance and Lynden Transport delivered the supplies to the communities which were then distributed by Foundation Health partners to doctors, dentists and health providers who have been unable to secure PPE on their own. "We value our partnership with Lynden and appreciate the help distributing these supplies," says Wendie MacNaughton, External Affairs Manager for Northern Star. The shipment, which was the largest donation received from private industry, included 12,500 isolation gowns, 100,000 N95 masks and 400,000 surgical masks. "Lynden Logistics employees were glad we could assist Northern Star-Pogo navigate the import challenges that come with these PPE imports, and we're extremely grateful for their generous donation to Alaskan health care providers," says Keith Hall, Licensed Customs Broker for Lynden Logistics in Anchorage.

Lynden companies were winners this summer, receiving recognition for trucking, cold storage transportation and 3PL services. Lynden Transport was ranked 39 out of the Top 100 For-Hire Carriers in North America according to Transport Topics 2020 list. Lynden was one of only three carriers to be named within the West Coast and Canada. Food Logistics magazine named Lynden to the 2020 Top 3PL & Cold Storage Providers last month, which recognizes leading third-party logistics and cold storage providers in the food and beverage industry.

The company received the third-highest overall weighted score among Less-than-Truckload (LTL) Western Regional carriers and was especially strong in the Customer Service and Equipment & Operations categories. The Logistics Management annual awards are the gold standard for customer satisfaction and performance excellence for carriers, ports and logistics providers worldwide.

Sea urchins to Kombucha, Brown Line carries cool freight

Brown Line employee loading a truckBrown Line's 'bread and butter' is the I-5 corridor from Washington to California. Four days a week drivers make the trip hauling fresh and frozen fish, chicken and other refrigerated products up and down the coast.

"We also haul some lesser-known types of freight, like sea urchin and Kombucha," explains Riley Rosvold, Brown Lines Sales Manager. The round, spiky creatures are harvested for the eggs inside, called roe, which is used in sushi. Brown Line is the only carrier in the Pacific Northwest trusted to carry the high-value, temperature-sensitive freight.

Divers bring the urchins to the surface during the winter months and they are delivered to Brown Line for transport to Oxnard and Los Angeles, CA. They are then processed and the roe is flown to Japan.

Sea urchin"We are diversifying our freight hauls," Riley says. "In the past, Brown Line has been reliant on the seafood industry, but now we are moving into more dairy and vegan products." Offering both truckload and LTL service throughout the U.S. and Western Canada, Brown Line provides companies with a variety of delivery options.

"Natural foods businesses are turning to us for reliable and safe delivery of yogurt-based drinks, vegan protein drinks and probiotics like Kombucha fermented tea." Every Thursday, Brown Line drivers pick up approximately 30,000 pounds of LTL freight from Yakult USA in Fountain Valley, CA and deliver to locations throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada, including grocery stores in Oregon and Washington.

"Our freight is extremely time-sensitive due to short shelf life and expiration dates, so we have to be vigilant about traffic, deadlines and equipment," Riley explains. "Many customers shipping fresh and chill products have sell-by dates which are less than a week after production. It is a testament to our driving teams and dispatchers that our customers trust us to deliver their products at the peak of freshness and quality – especially in the congested Los Angeles area. Routing our trucks efficiently and effectively is imperative."

Jon Morris credits Brown Line with the successful startup of his company Ocean Life Enterprises of Anacortes, WA last year. "Not once during the entire season did we fail to deliver on time," he says.

Last year Brown Line took delivery of 12 reefer trailers featuring the TransTex Edge TopKit Aerodynamic System which provide a 5.5 percent improvement in fuel mileage. In addition, 17 fuel-efficient Freightliner Cascadia Trucks were purchased that average 8 miles per gallon. The state-of-the-art equipment helps drivers get the job done, protects the fragile freight and gives customers confidence in the company. "We get feedback that our clean and modern equipment is one more reason customers place their trust in us," Riley says.

Brown Line earns third EPA Award and Skagit County recognition

Brown Line truckInvestment in cutting-edge equipment and the skill of its driving teams has earned Brown Line a third consecutive SmartWay High Performer Award from the Environmental Protection Agency. For the past three years, Brown Line has been included in the minority – only 2 percent – of SmartWay carriers to receive this honor for all scoring metrics.

"Our team is very proud to receive this award for the third consecutive year," says Brown Line President Bill Johansen. "We continue to work hard to ensure we reduce carbon emissions by reducing idle time, sudden starts and stops and by using a new system called SmartDrive. This system allows our team to work together to improve driver safety and driving habits while reducing carbon emissions."

This year, Brown Line added 14 new fuel-efficient trucks to its fleet. Now 90 percent of its equipment is under five years old. New trailers arrived last month with electrical plug-ins allowing the refrigeration unit to turn off its generator to save on fuel and emissions. They will be tested with a new aerodynamic system in place of trailer tails that is designed to reduce the low pressure drag behind the trailer. The new system is expected to increase fuel economy and durability while reducing weight.

Brown Line also upgraded its refrigeration units with StarTrak, a system capable of sending alerts to dispatchers, drivers or shop personnel if any refrigeration unit is not maintaining the temperature set point. The temperature can also be adjusted remotely while a unit is enroute.

In the past five years, Brown Line has improved its fuel economy by nearly 40 percent and, in the past seven years, it has reduced its nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions per ton mile by 44 percent and 62 percent respectively.

Brown Line was also voted Best Trucking and Logistics Company in the annual "Skagit's Best" contest. More than 41,000 people voted online to honor Skagit County's best businesses.

Lynden Transport maintains No. 1 ranking in 2019 Quest for Quality Awards

Quest for Quality AwardLynden Transport maintained its top spot among carriers by earning a seventh consecutive No. 1 ranking and its 23rd overall award in the 36th annual Logistics Management Quest for Quality Awards. The company received the highest scores among Less-than-Truckload (LTL) western regional carriers in the on-time performance and information technology categories and earned the highest overall weighted score.

“Although this is our seventh award in seven years, it is still exciting and gratifying to be recognized by our customers for the work we do each day,” says Lynden Transport President Paul Grimaldi. “Our industry is rapidly changing with the demands of e-commerce and the pressure of quicker delivery expectations. This award lets us know that we are not only keeping pace with industry changes, we are doing it while providing exceptional customer service. As always, credit goes to our hard-working drivers, customer service representatives, support staff and the entire Lynden Transport team.”

For more than 30 years, Logistics Management’s Quest for Quality Award has been regarded as the highest measure of customer satisfaction and performance excellence in the transportation and logistics industry. The results are the culmination of a six-month research project conducted by Peerless Research Group. This year, 4,975 ballots were cast by readers for the “best of the best” in service excellence across a number of criteria including: on-time performance, equipment & operations, value, information technology and customer service. To be a winner, a company had to receive at least five percent of the category vote.

Alaska West Express named Alaska’s safest truck fleet for 2018

Award ceremonyAlaska West Express received the 2018 Alaska Safe Truck Fleet of the Year Award from the Alaska Trucking Association (ATA) at its annual meeting in April. Alaska West Express also received the award in 2016, 2014, and 2013. The carrier was recognized for its safety performance in 2018, including accident frequency rates, Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores and OSHA recordable injuries. Pictured to the right are members of ConocoPhillips, Alaska West Express and the ATA at the meeting.

The ATA sponsors this prestigious safety award with ConocoPhillips to recognize and reward carriers who operate safely on the highway and in the workplace. CSA is a major safety measurement and reporting initiative of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

"This award demonstrates the dedication and hard work of our entire team of transportation professionals," says Alaska West Express President Eric Badger. "Our drivers, maintenance personnel, operators, dispatchers, supervisors, managers and administrators all share in this success. The award is based on best in class for the number of accidents, personnel injuries and actions the carrier takes to better the cargo tank industry.
