How and when did you start working for Lynden Transport? Have you worked for or done projects with other Lynden companies?
I worked at Fred Meyer for 10 years, and one of the Lynden drivers told me about an opening in operations at Lynden. I applied, and Justus Uphus hired me. I work with other companies like Alaska Marine Trucking, Alaska West Express and Lynden Logistics on various Lynden projects.
What is a typical day like for you?
I start at 5 a.m. which is when three of our drivers get started. I'm the opener, so I have responsibility to plan out the whole day from start to finish. I assign loads and deliveries and keep track of everything on the computer, dispatch, discipline, and handle safety meetings. We are a 24-7 operation here. It's always busy, and can be a bit chaotic at times, but I like it. We have 41 local drivers, six dock hands, two company line-drivers, twenty owner operators under contract, and six supervisors, so it's a big group in Anchorage. Supervisors come in at 5 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 10 p.m. Our goal is 5,000 pounds of cargo over the dock in an hour.
What has been most challenging in your career?
When road closures impact our deliveries. The road to Prudhoe Bay was closed recently, so you have to plan around those challenges. Washouts, snow and natural disasters make the job harder, but always is an opportunity to overcome a challenge to be successful.
What are you most proud of in your career?
I've worked all the positions here as supervisor, pickup and delivery, overnights, and line-haul, and I feel I've mastered all those positions, so I am now the "everything" guy. I also enjoyed a project where we flew in and trucked live bison to repopulate a herd in Alaska.
Can you tell us about your family and growing up years?
I grew up in Palmer, Alaska with my parents and one older brother. I still live in Palmer. I played hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer in high school and earlier years. My dad was the coach of my little league team and I played catcher, third base, and shortstop.
My dad works in the oil field, originally from Minnesota, then moved to Alaska for his work opportunities 40 years ago. I get my strong work ethic from him.
What was your first job?
I started as a part-time parcel worker at Fred Meyer, stocking shelves and putting away returns, when I was 16, and worked my way up to grocery manager.
What would surprise most people about you?
I rented to own my first house at 19 and bought it when I was 21.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I am a huge Anaheim Ducks hockey fan. My family used to go to Las Vegas to watch NASCAR, and I would make a side trip to California to see a Ducks game. I ride dirt bikes and like to go camping/hiking with friends and family. I have a German Shepherd named JJ and a cat named Cloud. JJ is named after a character in the TV show Criminal Minds and Cloud is named after a Final Fantasy character. I like going to concerts and got a chance to go to Puerto Rico on vacation recently.
What do you like best about your job?
The variety and the daily challenges to overcome. I like being in a leadership position to try to stay ahead of the incoming issues, if there are any, and take care of the customers. I like a busy, productive environment.
