Each Megapack weighs 80,000 pounds and is valued at $1.8 million. Alaska Marine Lines barged them directly into Anchorage for transloading onto Alaska West Express trailers for final delivery and later installation at Tesla Energy battery storage power stations. Megapack is a powerful stationary rechargeable lithium-ion battery manufactured by Tesla Energy, the clean energy subsidiary of Tesla, Inc. Launched in 2019, each Megapack can store up to 3.9 megawatt hours of electricity. Chugach is investing in a Battery Energy Storage System to stabilize the grid and promote reliability and efficiency. The goal is to improve the primary frequency response on the Railbelt Transmission System and allow Chugach to generate the same amount of power consuming less natural gas.
