Meet Sidney Huhndorf - Project Engineer at Knik Construction. Sidney isn’t new to tough projects — or tough conditions. Born and raised in Alaska, he cut his teeth in the oil and gas industry, spending nearly six years working his way up from intern to drilling engineer on major exploration projects across the state. He learned early that success in Alaska means working hard, thinking fast, and never shying away from a challenge.

But when it came time to start a family, Sidney knew it was time for a shift — the opportunity with Knik Construction came at just the right time. “It was the right opportunity at the right time,” he says. He traded pipelines for asphalt, joining Knik Construction as a project engineer and jumping straight into the world of heavy civil work.

His first project? The Funny River Road rehabilitation, where long days of traffic control and public interaction quickly taught him how demanding — and rewarding — Alaska road work can be.

Since then, Sidney’s taken on every opportunity to grow his skill set and tackle new challenges head-on. His favorite project to date? The emergency culvert replacement on Coho Loop Road this spring. After a mid-winter washout, Knik Construction crews mobilized fast — battling weather, time constraints, and logistics to get the job done.

“It moved quick… but that’s the kind of work I enjoy,” Sidney says. “Fast-paced, problem solving, making it happen.”

What does Sidney enjoy most about working with Knik Construction? For him, it’s the people and the priorities. “I really enjoy Knik Construction’s company culture — over the past two years it’s been exactly what I was looking for outside of oil and gas,” he says. “The focus on family, the work-life balance — it’s just better. Working summers and having winters off, it’s a better rhythm. Two weeks on, two weeks off — that rotation is brutal. You spend one week recovering and the next week heading back.”

For Sidney, what keeps the job exciting is the opportunity to keep growing, the solid team around him, and building critical projects that make a difference for Alaska communities. His dream job? “Knik Construction landing a project down in Southeast Alaska, maybe Juneau — good challenges, better summer weather.”

At the end of the day, Sidney keeps his focus where it counts: stay sharp, ask questions,
never cut corners. As he says, passing down advice from a mentor that still drives him
today: “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

And that’s exactly why Sidney shows up ready to learn, lead, and help Knik Construction keep building Alaska — one project at a time.
