Thirty years ago, in Nome Sweet Nome, SweetPea started hauling Hot Mix Asphalt for one of Knik Construction’s many projects. Today, she can operate the vast majority of Knik’s equipment with ease. SweetPea, or "P", continually rolls up her sleeves and takes on whatever task needs to be done.
The short and sweet Alaska construction lifestyle is just her cup of tea. Enjoying the winters off in Mexico and having the freedom to travel is one of the many perks she relishes in.
One of P’s favorite aspects of working with Knik is the variety of challenging work in remote places, making new friends, and improving infrastructure for the communities Knik works in. With her adventurous spirit, she has worked on projects across the wild west of Alaska to Point Lay on the North Slope and Shemya on the Aleutian Islands. Traveling the Interior brought her to the banks of the Kuskokwim River, where the beautiful river town of McGrath became her home in 2001.
For SweetPea, colleagues that she feels have become a part of her family, and the care and understanding of the company as a whole is one of the many facets she appreciates and values.
SweetPea tips her hardhat to Knik’s old-timers who had the patience to mentor and shape her to be the operator she is today. When asked what advice she would like to impart, SweetPea says, "Have an open mindset. At Knik, you’ll be given the opportunity to learn a skill set that can advance your career in a multitude of ways if you’re dedicated and willing to put in the time."
SweetPea is a leader and role model for women in construction where her dedication shows through her detailed work. We’re grateful to have P on our team!
