Meet Knik Construction Employee Blake Williams! Blake’s journey to Alaska began with a one-way ticket. Born in New Jersey in 1969 and raised in Wisconsin, Blake graduated from high school in 1987. At 18 years old, his parents gifted him a backpack, a tent, a sleeping bag, and a one-way ticket to Alaska, setting the stage for an adventurous new chapter in his life.
Blake started working for Knik in 2003, making this his 22nd season with the company. One of his first projects was the road from Dillingham to Lake Aleknagik—a project he still fondly remembers. Another favorite project location of his is Yakutat. This year, as Knik celebrates its 50th anniversary, Blake has been proud to contribute to almost half of the company’s history.
With around 30 years in the construction industry, Blake was initially motivated by the need to pay bills. Over the years, he has specialized primarily in paving and milling.
For Blake, the most fulfilling part of being a construction operator is seeing the finished product. The sight of fresh asphalt with its black and oily sheen, coupled with newly painted white and yellow lines, brings immense gratification after long days and hard work.
Blake believes that the remoteness of Knik’s projects and the logistics involved set the company apart from others in the industry. Additionally, he appreciates how well Knik takes care of its employees at camp, mentioning that the food is always top-notch.
Outside of work, Blake enjoys bow hunting whitetail deer, a hobby that allows him to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors.
Blake’s dedication and passion for his work are evident in every project he undertakes. His journey from a high school graduate with a one-way ticket to a seasoned construction operator at Knik is truly inspiring. We’re proud to have Blake as part of our team and appreciate the hard work and expertise he brings to every project.
