How and when did you start working for Aloha Marine Lines?
I started in November of 2018. I was a truck driver delivering containers every day to Aloha Marine Lines. I got the inside scoop of a position opening through an AML employee.
What is a typical day like for you?
I start at 6 a.m. and work with truckers and customers moving freight. I’m in the yard 95 percent of the time. I do everything from discharge and load back the barge. Our barge operation is super busy.
What has been most challenging in your career?
Barge Load back. Trying to figure out what load goes where, then making sure the barge is secured and lashed for its journey back to Seattle. Also anything that we have to tandem pick with two forklifts. The operator and driver have to be on the same page.
What are you most proud of in your career?
Hawaii is a small group, but we can handle large volumes of cargo. I try to keep a positive attitude at work and use some sarcastic humor to keep things light.
Can you tell us about your family and growing up years?
I am Native Hawaiian. We grew up fishing and surfing in the ocean. I have two older sisters and one younger brother. I’ve been married for 37 years with three beautiful children. When I was growing up I was an athlete in high school. I played football, basketball and ran track.
What was your first job?
Truck driver. I’m a 30-year truck driver with a CDL Class A, for Hazmat and Tanker and I’m a die-hard Peterbilt Trucker.
What would surprise most people about you?
I ran two Honolulu Marathons. I race a standup paddleboard in distance races and continue to race to this day.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I spend most of my time at the beach with my family. I enjoy catching waves and embodying the spirit of Aloha, bringing that same positivity and enthusiasm to all aspects of life.
What do you like best about your job?
The variety. Every day is different. I also get to work with a great group of co-workers.
