awe_apprenticeship_newAlaska West Express is expanding career opportunities with two new programs, the Transportation Mechanic Apprenticeship and the Yard to Driver Apprenticeship in Fairbanks, AK. “We are encouraging people to start careers in the transportation industry early with these programs,” says Mark Pliska, Alaska West Express HSSE Specialist. The programs are an answer to a shortage of qualified mechanics and drivers in Alaska, and a lack of vocational training programs in public schools.

The Transportation Mechanic Apprenticeship Program combines hands-on, paid training, and the benefits of a nationally recognized, credentialed training program. “Our program is a registered apprenticeship through the U.S. Department of Labor, combining structured classroom instruction with real-world, hands-on experience,” Mark explains. “As a hybrid program, apprentices build technical knowledge in the classroom while completing a defined number of on-the-job learning hours under the guidance of a dedicated mentor.”

Individuals may be hired as Mechanic Assistants as early as age 16, with additional consideration given to students who are enrolled in a related Career and Technical Education (CTE) program through their high school. Mechanic Assistants who are currently employed at Alaska West Express and will be at least 18 years old at the start of the next apprenticeship cycle are eligible to apply for the program as well. Applications typically open during the summer.

Once accepted into the paid program, each apprentice receives a toolbox and all required tools. The apprenticeship program takes more than two years to complete. Those who complete the program receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor as well as a Diesel Technology Certificate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. “Apprentices who remain employed with Alaska West Express for at least one year keep the toolbox and tools as part of our investment in their longterm success,” Mark says. The toolbox and tools are valued at over $4,000.

The Yard to Driver Apprenticeship Program combines hands-on work experience, accredited in-house training, and one-on-one mentorship toward earning a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and transition into a professional driving role.

Participants are first hired as freight operators and begin by working in the Alaska West Express yard. Once accepted into the apprenticeship program, they are enrolled in an accredited in-house driving school. “This approach provides valuable, real-world experience and allows participants to become familiar with our operations before getting behind the wheel,” Mark explains. Each apprentice is paired with a dedicated mentor who provides guidance throughout the program. Upon completion, apprentices acquire their Class A CDL license and are ready to drive for Lynden.
