25 years of trucking at Red Dog Mine

Wed, Dec 11, 2024

dml_crewTwenty-five years ago, NANA/Lynden Logistics, a partnership between NANA Regional Corporation and Lynden Logistics, was established to provide transportation and logistical services for the Red Dog Mine in Kotzebue, AK. In 2020 the name was changed to DeLong Mountain Logistics as part of a reorganization program at NANA. Over the years, the Lynden team of drivers, mechanics and other employees have ensured that zinc and lead ore concentrate, freight and fuel for the mine are transported safely and efficiently between the mine and the port site 52 miles away. “At this quarter-century milestone, we are reflecting on our partnerships and on our talented team who safely and professionally operate specialized equipment in the harsh Arctic environment,” says General Manager Mark Tatlow.

Since trucking operations for Red Dog began on Nov. 1, 1999, drivers have hauled 32,858,236Pete Johnson_Tireman (2) tons of concentrate and 289,751,447 gallons of diesel fuel. Approximately 1,189,706 tons of freight has been transported via barge since the marine portion of the project started in 1998. “Trucking has held steady over the past 25 years,” Mark says, “and our marine work has steadily increased from 30,000 tons a year to 82,000 tons this year, which is a new record.”

Of the 61 employees who work at the mine, Office Manager Connie Schaeffer has been there the longest, at 25 years. Tire Technician Pete Johnson is right behind with 24 years of service.

“Our experienced team is looking forward to supporting the mine into 2025 and beyond,” Mark says.
