Lynden Air Cargo is using its versatile Hercules aircraft to serve B2Gold Corp’s Back River Gold District project, located above the Arctic Circle in Nunavut, Canada. The remote location is only accessible by air or sea, and equipment must be disassembled and flown in from Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories. “We ran 59 flights for B2 in June and July and are ramping up for another campaign this fall,” says Dan Marshall, Senior Commercial Operations Manager for Lynden Air Cargo.
B2Gold needs a fleet of Sandvik underground and surface machines to be transported to the mine district. Six new units will be delivered in 2023 and 2024. B2Gold’s team had to break the rigs down into about eight pieces to fit in the Herc. Lynden delivered three of the six units this summer.
“One of the biggest achievements and accolades for our amazing flight crew, mechanics and loadmasters, is that we averaged almost three flights per day. We missed only one day due to a mechanical issue which required parts to be overnighted in from Anchorage,” Dan says.
The flight crew includes Captains Daryl Smith and Jake Johnson, First Officers Rachel Allsup and Ross Oleck, Flight Engineers Ed Rea and Jimmie Mizell, Mechanics Stephen Boisvert and Michael Gayvoronskiy, and Loadmasters Hollis Hasbrouck and Kalvin Ruth.
